Perception Isn't Reality
We have all heard and maybe even parroted the phrase“perception is reality” at one time or another. This phrase is not baseless as perception determines personal reality at many levels; however, it does not determine external, objective reality. Paranormal television and a desire for recognition, has seduced many individuals into a reality far removed from objective truth. I have had numerous individuals approach me, intrigued with the idea of personal involvement with supernatural encounters namely those within the demonic sphere. Why would a sane person want to step into a world that he will never escape? The parasitic nature of the price to be paid for involvement far exceeds
what most are capable. Not only does this price have a sinister, parasitic quality, you are liable for a perpetual debt, outstanding for the remainder of one’s natural life. I can only conjecture why God allows a perpetual debt of this nature to exist within our realm. It is an abnormal existence.
Perceived reality: “I want to be a demonologist” or “I want to investigate demonic disturbances” – Reality: You would be much better off playing with a pack of agitated pit bulls. When one trespasses onto Satan’s domain, intruding into his business, he or she becomes an instant celebrity with the hosts of darkness. You will live in a continuous realm of spiritual focus possessing inimical tentacles extending to family members, loved ones and pets.
Notwithstanding disseminated nonsense from self-appointed demonologists, thriving on publicity and fanfare, encountering demons of their own creation, standing face-to-face with a demonic entity, is life altering. The very core of your being changes. Anyone who has ever encountered the demonic will tell you that a brush with bona fide evil leaves a stain upon one’s soul, serving as a constant reminder of the vile and unspeakable nature of evil. The late Malachi Martin put it best in his book “Hostage to the Devil,” “Close contact with the opposite of humanness, causes something to die within oneself. Some part of one’s humanness will wither from such close contact and it is rarely, if ever, revitalized.”
During the 90’s my wife and I lived in a neighborhood developed on what was once a Civil War battlefield. Several families in that area reported paranormal activity within their homes although I believe a part of this activity was nothing more than residual (non-interactive) hauntings –environmental imprints. With that said, however, I was physically attacked by a malevolent entity while living there, resulting in three long scratches down my chest and abdomen. I have never felt anything burn as badly as these scratches did. My wife and I were in a state of disbelief, violated; threatened and seemingly helpless in fighting something we could not see. We called for a pastor who, unfortunately, was ill equipped to handle this intrusion into our space. It took quite some time before we could feel secure within our home again. This single encounter did not spiritually affect my wife and me in comparison to future experiences except for having permanently changed the landscape. We could no longer look at the world in the way we once did. We saw and continue to see two worlds – spiritual and physical - co-existing together, inseparable parts of each other.
I neither have the desire nor claim to be a religious demonologist, I do know, however, that after having been in the field, demonologists and other workers, for the most part, live secluded and lonely lives. Friends are few, as one cannot possibly understand something spiritual unless experienced by oneself. God never meant for us to experience it. For reasons I do not fully understand, this experience and, to a lesser degree, knowledge, isolates a person at certain levels. I believe that a part of this isolation is due, in part, to philosophical naturalism held by certain of family, friends and acquaintances. In addition, stigma is attached and is a powerful phenomenon. Similarly, after having lost my son, friends avoided me as Derek’s death made them very uncomfortable. His death challenged the natural order of things and possibly forced them to contemplate the mortality of their own kids. One thing is certain; people do not truly understand how this field of work and study affects those who intercede on behalf of those in bondage. Much suffering and losses go with this area of work.
A few years ago, I offended a paranormal investigator by warning her and one of her teammates of the dangers inherent in a month long experiment the two were to conduct at a place known to be a hotbed of activity. Angered, she publically stated, “If you don’t have what it takes to investigate, stay in the safety of your home and watch TV. Investigating is only for those who have the guts to do it.” She belonged to a group that had connections with another highly visible group. This young woman reveled in all the exposure stemming from those connections. I do not know what kind of investigations this group had been involved in up to that point, but I did know that she never encountered a demon before. She and her teammate did not complete the experiment because they encountered a foul spirit and suffered horribly from the outpouring of its rage. She quickly disappeared from the “ghost hunting” scene. Making light of these forces set her up for a vicious demonic reality check. She crossed the line and I pray that she has come to terms with her new reality.
Once you step into the spiritual arena, you have forever altered your life. Your world turns upside down. The demonic will seek direct and personal revenge for intervention, in the case of those intervening on the behalf of others, against them. They tear families apart, ruin lives, possess, rape and kill. Friends and family relationships can be manipulated to be used against you. Bringing home "hitchhikers" become a terrorizing probability. You and your loved ones will have unearthly visitations. Pets mysteriously become sick and/or die. Foul spirits will prey up the weakest member of your family. Objects, particularly religious, are thrown off the walls, Bibles are thrown off tables and clocks run counterclockwise. You may hear banging or knocking in a series of three. All the foregoing can happen either day or night but usually peaks between 3:00 and 4:00 am, mocking Christ and the Trinity. The ultimate goal, I believe, is to destroy the individual, weakening his faith or turning him away from his belief system. There is a religious context to the physical, psychological and spiritual attacks. Once involved, it is impossible to get out in the absolute sense.
I hope this article will change the minds and personal realities of those entertaining the idea of becoming a “demonologist.” Interceding on the behalf of those in bondage is a moral obligation that you may never have to fulfill throughout your entire life – it is that rare. I had a skydiving instructor once tell me the very second you exit a plane; you committed suicide unless your canopy opens. This applies to trespassing on Satan’s property as well, less the canopy. The unseen war that rages around us is a reality that is difficult to comprehend. There is no need to experience a constant state of exhaustion from having to stay on your toes and from being the subject of every affliction placed upon you and your family.
